Understanding Emergency Contraception

May 26, 2026

Emergency Contraception at Peter Street Pharmacy, Drogheda

At Peter Street Pharmacy, we understand that needing emergency contraception can feel stressful or overwhelming. We’re here to offer a safe, non-judgmental, and completely confidential space where you can access the care, guidance, and reassurance you need — with no GP prescription or pre-booked appointment required.

What to Expect: A Private, Personalised Consultation

Every step of our service is designed around your comfort, dignity, and privacy.

Private consultation room. You’ll be invited into our dedicated consultation room to speak one-to-one with a qualified pharmacist, away from the main shop floor.

Clinical assessment. Together with the pharmacist, you’ll complete a short suitability and consultation form. Our pharmacists are highly trained to assess your individual situation, and depending on where you are in your cycle and the timing of intercourse, they may determine that emergency contraception isn’t actually needed.

Medication options. If emergency contraception is appropriate, we’ll provide the hormonal option best matched to your timeline and health history, and your pharmacist will explain why it’s the right fit for you.

Immediate protection. Emergency contraception is highly time-sensitive — the sooner it’s taken, the more effective it is. We aim to see you without delay.

Beyond Emergency Care: Your Long-Term Options

Your consultation is also a chance to think about your ongoing reproductive health. Our pharmacists are happy to talk through the full range of contraceptive choices available to you.

If you’re considering regular, long-term contraception — or a long-acting option such as an intrauterine device (IUD) — we can give you the information you need and refer you on to a local GP or family planning clinic for treatment.

We follow HSE guidelines so this care is accessible to everyone who needs it:
